Master of Arts Course Details

The Department of Languages was established in 2019 under the Indus Institute of Sciences, Humanities & Liberal Studies. The objective is to create an English language proficient workforce through training the trainers/teachers and the students methodically in the latest trends of language and literature teaching hence making them industry-ready with a plethora of opportunities in the market. The syllabus has also been designed to assist students in further research in the field of Literature. The course will assist students in gaining language and ultimately in making a career in content writing, editing, proofreading, copywriting, public relations, reporting, teaching, and novel writing upon acquiring a degree.

This course shall open several doors in academia as an English Language professor, translator or trainer in private firms, a forensic linguist with reputed syndicates, or a lexicographer.

The Objective of the Course

  • This postgraduate course would expose the learner to historical developments in English language teaching and learning with the acquisition and learning of a second or a third language, western theories of language acquisition and learning, specific methods and approaches, and the principles of Communicative Language Teaching and Testing.
  • The course would acquaint the learners with the basic language skills required for academic communication and provide exposure to teach those skills in practice while focusing on developing and exploring all the receptive and fundamental language skills.
  • The course would look into pedagogical aspects that could be successfully employed in teaching speaking skills to students of English and help them understand and explore the principles and methods of teaching Literature in the ELT classroom.
  • The course would introduce and expose the basic premises that inform the sound system of the English language - to devise language materials in different genres of Literature, try them out and investigate the interface of discourse analysis and sociocultural contexts within which the language is used.
  • Finally, it would explore the possibilities of producing skills-based materials, specifically focusing on how they could be integrated within a language classroom.

Course Outcomes at Indus University 

  •  Students will be learning aspects of language teaching including, but not limited to, phonetics, syntax, phonology, morphology, semantics, and pragmatics, along with Principles of Language Teaching, Materials Development, Second Language Acquisition, and Language Testing & Assessment. 
  • It explores the models of learning language through multimedia with particular reference to SLA and the integration of multimedia in language teaching the possibilities of simple programs, the principles of multimedia materials production within the context of specific language learning situations along with the basic principles that underlie courses in English for Specific Purposes.
  • The course would, in the higher semesters, outline the basic features of corpora and how they can be successfully integrated into a curriculum for academic purposes: familiarizing the students with the basic concepts of research and providing exposure to hand on experience of the research proposal and research design, form the possibilities of designing materials for a communicative classroom and investigate the underlying principles that determine the production of materials in the contemporary context, help develop the various principles involved in evaluating syllabi and designing courses. It would also equip the student to apply the principles to specific contexts.
  • It initiates the core principles that govern business communication and provides a platform to understand the basic concepts like style and language that differentiate business communication from other forms of communication.

The English Language Lab is a conscientiously created language learning software solution. English Language Lab is designed to enhance students’ language skills, thus increasing employability and ensuring a successful career. It makes the teaching and learning of language highly enjoyable.

The Language Lab practical input prepares students to communicate in English with clarity and confidence. It offers continuous evaluation, content, teaching expertise, and methodology. The sessions are designed to train students in soft skills to help them succeed in the recruitment process. A solid and conscious effort is made to make the learning process enjoyable, innovative, and exciting. Besides language development, the activities aim to develop their self-esteem and confidence through presentations and competitions. The students are exposed to several practice activities where they can practice words by listening to the correct pronunciation, recording their voice, and comparing their recording with the correct pronunciation. In the language, classroom care is taken to ensure that students recognize speaking, listening, reading, and writing as active & constructive processes.

Placement Cell at Indus

Department Activities

Telescope Launch Event and Astronomy Workshop

On October 22, 2024, IISHLS organized a highly successful Telescope Launch Event, drawing over 100 enthusiastic students and faculty members. The highlight of the event was an engaging talk by Prof. Brijmohan Thakore titled Backyard Astronomy: Observing the Cosmic Landscape. In his insightful presentation, Prof. Thakore introduced participants to the art of backyard astrophotography, demonstrating how simple observations can lead to meaningful scientific projects, such as calculating the Moon’s size or analyzing the spectrum of Polaris. Following the talk, an interactive workshop covered the history, types, and mounts of telescopes, along with the optical phenomena that bring celestial objects into view through the telescope’s eyepiece, enriching participants' understanding of observational astronomy.

Industrial Visit

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the Department of Chemistry-IISHLS organized a visit to the Search Toxicology Laboratory, Public Health Laboratory, and Forensic Science Laboratory in Ahmedabad for 25 B.Sc. and M.Sc. chemistry students. The students gained hands-on experience with advanced instruments like HPLC, GC, AAS, UPLC, FTIR, and centrifugation equipment, as well as DNA sequencing and extraction. This visit provided valuable insights into food, drug, pesticide, and biological sample analysis, showcasing the latest advancements in analytical technology.

Social Outreach Activity: Students of BA English and Liberal Studies Visited Visamo Kids Foundation

The Department of Health Science, IISHLS, conducted an industrial visit to Amul Dairy in Anand, Gujarat, on August 09, 2024, for students from Clinical Research, Microbiology, BA English, and Psychology programs. This visit offered students a valuable opportunity to explore the food industry, focusing on providing a comprehensive understanding of the latest developments and technologies in milk collection, processing, preservation, packaging, distribution, and the manufacturing of over 50 milk products.
