The Department of Languages organizes One Week International Workshop on Teaching Language Through Literature for Post-Graduate program in Master of Arts (ELT) from 9th August – 14th August 2021 at Institute of Sciences, Humanities & Liberal Studies, Indus University. 

Day 1

Day One of the Workshop was graced by Dr. Shyaonti Talwar, Master Trainer from Cambridge.  Dr. Talwar is not only a professor of English at Pune University but also someone who has trained extensively across India for British Council Connecting Classrooms, conducting principal and teacher training workshops on 21st century core skills that include Critical Thinking, Creativity and Communication, Student Leadership and Digital Literacy. Her interactive session gave students practical understanding through fun-activities to use literature for teaching language. Dr. Talwar is also a senior presenter of Cambridge English Assessment, a division of the University of Cambridge UK and conducts Teacher Support Programmes (TSP) and principal and coordinator seminars on Cambridge English Exams and other areas of ELT.  It has been a matter of honour that a resource person of this stature consented to interacting with the students of Indus University. 

The program was also graced by the presence of Dr. Sandeep Chakravorty, Dean Academics IU who encouraged students to achieve optimum benefit out of such noteworthy initiatives by the Department of Languages.  Dr. Mamta Pillai, Head of the Department briefed about the line-up of resource persons ahead during the week from reputed institutions of India and abroad starting from ELFU Lucknow, Shiv Nadar University Chennai, Central University of Tamil Nadu, National Institute of Technology Himachal Pradesh, GLS University Gujarat to Cambridge and Michigan State University in United States of America. It is indeed a matter of pride for the Department of Languages to have organized a week-long National Workshop followed by an International Workshop in a span of one year to train the next generation of ELT professionals. 

Day 2 & 3

Day 2 & 3 of One-Week International Workshop on Teaching Language Through Literature was graced by Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, Michigan State University in United States of America and Dr. Pusp Ranjan, Assistant Professor at EFLU Lucknow. Recipient of numerous awards such as Open Educational Resources (OER) Leadership Award for Associated Students of Michigan State University in 2021, Adams Academy Fellowship, Academic Advancement Network, Michigan State University in 2020, Graduate College Summer Fellowship, University of Iowa in 2015, Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, University of Iowa in 2012 to name a few, Dr. Rajiv Ranjan’s session struck a right chord with the students with his exemplary knowledge on the subject mesmerized the students of the department. Dr. Pusp Ranjan’s session highlighted Stylistic Analysis, Discourse Analysis and Principles of using literature to teach writing skills, which paved the way for more food for thought for further research. It was indeed an honor for the Dept. of Languages to host the best of two minds from premier institutions in India & USA.

Day 4 & 5

Day 4 & 5 of One-Week International Workshop was graced by Dr. Nitin Pillai, Assistant Professor from GLS University Ahmedabad, who really engaged students in the stories he brought to the class.  Dr. Pillai introduced new concepts of Terribly Tiny Tales & Fairy Tales with different versions which can be exploited by teachers to teach language through literature.  His sessions were an absolute delight for his strengths as a keen reader of literature and as an ELT professional, and unanimously appreciated by all students. 

Dr. Deepesh Chandrasekharan, Assistant Professor from Shiv Nadar University, Chennai elaborated on Critical Approaches to Reading of Literature which can benefit an ELT trainer to become better at using literature in the language classroom.  Being NET qualified in Linguistics & English with CELTA certification, Dr. Deepesh’s sessions over two days were truly insightful for the students of English Language Teaching.
