About IYWCoE
Yoga is recognised as the subject of prime importance in the field of Health and wellness with its educational significance worldwide. The Government of India is currently promoting indigenous systems of health including Yoga in a strong manner through the Ministry of AYUSH.

Yoga has been a part of INDUS UNIVERSITY since its inception and now, in 2020, the Indus Yoga and Wellness Centre of Excellence has initiated into promoting health in a holistic manner with a scientific research based approach through collaboration with International Alliance of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) India Foundation. All students of the constituent colleges of INDUS UNIVERSITY are exposed to the Yoga training and numerous courses are offered in the field of Yoga and Wellness from certificate to M.Sc. level.

IYWCoE and IAYT India Foundation is aiming to provide wellness experts at the local Health and Wellness Centres of the National Health Mission (NHM).

National Health Mission
The National Health Mission (NHM), the country’s flagship health systems strengthening programme, particularly for primary and secondary health care envisages “attainment of universal access to equitable, affordable and quality health care which is accountable and responsive to the needs of people”.
The National Health Policy, 2017 recommended strengthening the delivery of primary health care, through establishment of “Health and Wellness Centres” as the platform to deliver comprehensive primary health care and called for a commitment of two thirds of the health budget to primary health care.

The Report of the Primary Health Care Task Force, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India while reiterating that primary health care is the only affordable and effective path for India to Universal Health Coverage, also provided valuable insights into structure and processes in health systems to enable Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC).

Ayushman Bharat or “Healthy India” national initiative was launched as recommended by the National Health Policy 2017, to achieve the vision of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This initiative has been designed on the lines as to meet SDG and its underlining commitment, which is “leave no one behind”.

Health and Wellness Centre
In February 2018, the Government of India’s announced the creation of 1,50,000 Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) by transforming existing Sub Centres and Primary Health Centres as the base pillar of Ayushman Bharat. These centres would deliver Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) bringing healthcare closer to the homes of people covering both maternal and child health services and non-communicable diseases, including free essential drugs and diagnostic services.

Health and Wellness Centres, are envisaged to deliver and expanded range of services to address the primary health care needs of the entire population in their area, expanding access, universality and equity close to the community. The emphasis of health promotion and prevention is designed to bring focus on keeping people healthy by engaging and empowering individuals and communities to choose healthy behaviours and make changes that reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and morbidities.

The delivery of Universal Comprehensive Primary Health Care, through HWCs will increase the health system responsiveness to people by bringing services closer to the communities and being able to address the needs of most marginalised through Primary Health Care team. The innovative focus of IYWCoE is on “Yognosis”, the concept of health promotion and disease prevention and management that enables us to work towards holistic health and wellbeing for all. This integrative approach bridges traditional and modern approaches to healthcare in the form of Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCI) enables us to serve the patient population in a more efficient, cost effective and patient friendly manner. This is in line with the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014–2023 developed and launched in response to the World Health Assembly resolution on traditional medicine (WHA62.13). This strategy aims to support Member States in developing proactive policies and implementing action plans that will strengthen the role traditional medicine plays in keeping populations healthy.

Vision
With international interest in its activities, IYWCoE strives to serve as a nodal centre to train medical professionals/educators and administrators for setting up such integrative health centres as it has necessary infrastructure and human resources. This is only possible due to the supportive and innovative milieu of Indus University, where the holistic art and science of Yoga that is our cultural heritage has been able to reach both the classes and the masses of our society optimally, effectively and holistically.
